Your weekly lesson is still the heart of it. Your teacher gets to know how you learn, what motivates you, what challenges you, and the music you want to make.
But private students at Heart Beats are also part of a music school. Four times a year, they step out of their regular lesson for Musicianship Week, and throughout the year there are recitals, special events, and opportunities to make music alongside other students.

Have a young musician?
Harmony Road may be the better place to start.
For many children ages 4–8, we strongly recommend Harmony Road. Singing, movement, rhythm, listening, keyboard playing, and music with friends build a strong foundation in a joyful class. We look at each child’s readiness for private lessons individually; there is no hard minimum age.
And this one is for you, too.
Harmony Road is a parent-and-child program. You’ll attend class, make music with your child, and help bring that learning home. Parent participation is at the heart of it. Classes begin around 18 months and continue through age 11.

What private lesson enrollment includes
47 weeks of instruction each year.
Private students receive 43 weeks of one-on-one lessons with their teacher, plus four Musicianship Weeks throughout the year.
Once each quarter, Musicianship Week takes the place of the regular private lesson. Students come together for theory, creativity, musical exploration, and learning with other students and teachers. It is a required part of private lesson enrollment.
Private students also have three school recitals each year.
Room to grow
There’s plenty of room to grow.
Some students are learning their first notes. Others are preparing for a performance, an evaluation, or a competition. We want students to have opportunities that fit where they are and where they want to go.
In addition to school recitals, students may participate in Certificate of Merit, National Guild Auditions, festivals, adjudicated events, competitions, and other performance opportunities when appropriate. These programs are optional, and your teacher can help you decide which opportunities are a good fit.
The practical details
Simple, flat-rate monthly tuition.
Private lessons meet weekly in Sacramento. Choose a 30-, 45-, or 60-minute lesson, with your teacher’s guidance on the best fit.
Tuition covers the full year of instruction—43 private lessons plus four Musicianship Weeks—and is divided into 12 equal monthly payments. Your monthly tuition stays the same throughout the year, whether a particular month has three private lessons or five.

Questions before you begin?
Who can take private lessons?
We teach children, teens, and adults. There isn’t one “right” age to begin private lessons—we look at the individual student. For many children ages 4–8, though, we strongly recommend starting with Harmony Road.
What happens at the free trial?
You’ll meet a prospective teacher, try a private lesson, and get a feel for whether it’s a good match before enrolling. Whenever possible, we schedule the trial with the teacher you would actually study with.
What happens during Musicianship Week?
Once each quarter, Musicianship Week takes the place of the regular private lesson. Students come together for theory, creativity, musical exploration, and activities with other students and teachers. It’s a required part of private lesson enrollment.
What if I need to miss a lesson?
With at least 24 hours’ notice, students may make up to two missed lessons per quarter. During summer, we allow up to four makeups for extra flexibility around vacations and summer plans.
How do I discontinue lessons?
Private lesson enrollment is ongoing. If you decide to stop lessons, we require 30 days’ notice.
Are Certificate of Merit, Guild, festivals, or competitions required?
No. Certificate of Merit, Guild Auditions, festivals, competitions, and other adjudicated events are optional opportunities for students who are interested and ready for them.
Are recitals required?
Students are expected to participate in school recitals as part of their music education. Heart Beats holds three each year.
